ENGL 413 - Perception, Politics, and Pleasure: Film and American Society

Prerequisite(s): One of the following: ART 407, ART 408, ENGL 213, ENGL 250, HUMA 202 or permission of instructor.  This course examines cinematic depictions of citizenship, race, class, crime and punishment, and sociopolitical processes in US society. Students will learn how films influence and reflect social perceptions and relations and how they shape and are shaped by our moral, cultural, and aesthetic values and appetites. Additionally, course participants will investigate American film as a potent art form in the world. This course will advance the thinking of those pursuing careers in the arts, public and media relations, politics, law, psychology, social advocacy, and education.
