3 Credits (Every semester) Prerequisite(s): PHLN 501, PHLN 510, PHLN 520, PHLN 530 and PUAD 630. This course explores collective giving, civic engagement, and mutual aid as activism in the pursuit of social change in the philanthropic and nonprofit sector. Students will learn about social justice in relation to philanthropy and how individuals and networks of people organize themselves to address social issues through collective giving. Their inquiry will include analysis of the channels, vehicles, and mechanisms by which people amplify and increase their impact by giving collectively and collaboratively with others. Moreover, students will have the opportunity to practice collaborative behaviors by forming a giving circle to engage local needs and distribute funds to experience grantmaking processes within the context of collective giving.
