When Offered (Every semester)
This course will explore the nature of poverty within the United States. Though a comparative-historical analysis students will explore the systemic nature of poverty, the failures of the capitalist system to address the creation and persistence of poverty, and the racialized nature of poverty. We will grapple with the following: How do we explain the paradox of poverty amidst plenty? Why are so many people poor in affluent America? This course will examine how poverty impacts communities in general with a special emphasis on the Black community in particular.
