Mission

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Technology is for the student whose primary interest is applying principles and practices that guide the development of industry complex technology systems. Graduates of the program are prepared to become professional software developers and system engineers. Graduates will be prepared with effective communication skills within the field setting.

Goals

1. To prepare new generations of computer and information technology professionals, arming them with the quality education necessary to administer complex technology systems.

2. To provide a robust academic environment by exposing students to hands-on lab experiences to understand the technical requirements of computer systems.

3. To maintain and establish new partnerships with national, regional, state, and local governmental agencies, business, and educational institutions

Assistantships and Financial Assistance

The Department of Technology and Security recognizes the high cost of education today and makes every effort to offer financial assistance to qualified students through a variety of programs. For further information, please contact the Department directly.

Student Activities

Students are invited to apply for these opportunities within the Department of Technology & Security.  Acceptance is based on established criteria for each opportunity.  These opportunities include:

• Girls Who Will…Summer Camp 

Girls Who Will (GWW) is a summer program for middle and high school girls that provides computer technology/science education to girls in the Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia areas.

• Computer Programming for Youth (CPU) Boys Camp

CPU Camp is a summer program for middle and high school boys that provide computer technology/science education to boys in the Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia areas.

• Department of Technology Support (DTS) Internships

DTS Support is open to Computer Technology majors that have successfully completed CTEC 114, CTEC 214, CTEC 302, CTEC 305 with an understanding of a wide variety of desktop application level issues and knowledge of network communications.

• Bowie Applied Technology  Training Laboratory Experience (BATTLE) Internships

BATTLE is a five-week paid internship program designed to develop and encourage technology innovation that enforced competency in Cloud Technology, Cloud Virtualization, Networking, Network & Server Security and Advanced Server Technology. The vision is to equip a generation of qualified and ready students with the knowledge and emerging technology tools who are able to meet local, state, national and international workforce requirements.

• Patriots Technology Training Center

A workshop session held on Saturdays for both Middle and High School students that have an interest in computers and excelling in school.  The committee will select 15 students based on teacher recommendation and most recent report card.

• Code Red Workshop

Code Red is a one day workshop for middle and high school girls that wish to learn about cybersecurity.

• Design and Think Innovation Capstone Project

Department of Technology & Security in collaboration with the Baltimore YouthWorks Program has created a five week capstone project that develops young professionals with innovative critical thinking skills that involve research to implement a technology driven solution which addresses the Baltimore City Community.

• Data and Cloud Computing Society Organization

The Data and Cloud Computing Society operates as an educational and social organization intended for members with an interest in cloud computing, data, and information technology. The Data and Cloud Computing Society was founded to create a cloud computing community within the University of Maryland, College Park and Bowie State University. The goal of the Data and Cloud Computing Society is to share and develop knowledge and skills in cloud computing, data analytics, data managements, infrastructure management, and software development through discussions and projects. Additionally, our organization encourages opportunities to network with information technology professionals and companies.

• Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense (CAE-CD)

Bowie State University (BSU) has been designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education by the National Security Agency (NSA) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS). All graduates of the Computer Technology Program in the Department of Technology & Security receive a certificate of completion for successfully completing the course requirements set forth by Bowie State University as a designated National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education by the United State Department of Homeland Ssecurity and the National Security Agency
