Women’s Studies Minor

At Bowie State University, the women’s studies program is part of the course offerings of the Department of History and Government. It provides an interdisciplinary approach to the study and analysis of the intersection of race, gender, and class in women’s lives. The program is designed to complement existing programs and the academic mission of the university by furnishing students with a comprehensive educational experience through developing their understanding of women’s impact in diverse fields of human activity and thought from multiple perspectives that transcend disciplinary boundaries.

The women’s studies minor, a complementary addition to most existing majors that prepares students for a variety of careers and opportunities, requires fifteen (15) credit hours that are chosen from the required courses and the elective courses. A student’s program, based on her/his interest(s), should be designed in consultation with a women’s studies academic adviser. Students interested in this course of study must earn a grade of “C” or higher in all women’s studies courses.

The required courses are as follows: Students must take Introduction to Women’s Studies, Women and American Society, and Black Women’s History. Women’s studies minors may take either Women and Philosophy or Women and Politics.
