Music Technology Minor


A minor in music technology provides studies in the music theory, business, and applications of technology hardware and software utilized for industry-standard music production. Students are required to prepare a Senior Project upon completion of the minor.

This minor will require 25-26 credits for completion.

  • As a supplement to the completely furnished music technology lab, students should have accessibility to a PC or Mac personal computer which is capable of downloading software programs such as Sibelius Notation, Pro Tools First, and other music software programs. A simple music controller may be required.
  • Students who seek a minor in Music Technology must maintain a grade of “C” or better in all required courses. Enrollment in Student Seminars is suggested to assist in developing networking with students of the music performance track or with the opportunity to perform with the permission of an applied music instructor.

Goals: The goals are to provide the industry-standard tools and processes that are employed in the creation of music for various projects. Students are provided hands-on experiences with the software and hardware tools in the state-of-the-art Music Technology lab and studio.

Student Learning Outcomes:

  • Learn and utilize the languages employed in music and music technology.
  • Explore the physical properties of analog and digital sound, synthesizers, microphones music recording, and the history of electronic music.
  • Investigate the uses of software and hardware appliances which provide compatibility with the PC and Mac computer platforms.
  • Develop skills to interface with multimedia projects. Preparation of websites, multi-media Power point presentations, and animation.
  • Develop knowledge of the fundamentals of musical composition and arranging for song writing and commercial jingles while utilizing electronic instruments and devices. Notation for small and large ensembles and arranging concepts are among the areas of instruction.
  • Gain knowledge and understanding of various recording media (CD, HD, DVD, and, Mini Disk), microphones and sound mixers for live and recording concepts. Perform simple two-hand parts on the piano such as scales, arpeggios and etudes.
  • Gain knowledge of the aspects of the business of music, including contracts, management, self-promotions, copyright, Internet and other electronic media.
  • Create a business plan for future careers in the entertainment industry.
  • Produce a senior project to be display understanding of music technology on the Bowie State University Music Technology YouTube channel or as a live presentation.
