MUSC 409 - Contemporary Black Music

3 Credits

When Offered Spring Every Two Years
From blues and jazz to R&B and Hip Hop, Black contemporary music has evolved technologically, politically, and economically with society, yet it still retains many of its salient African and African-American characteristics. This course explores the cultural, social, and historical growth of Black contemporary music. We will look at some of the surrounding art forms that contributed to the formation of the music and some that came about because of it. We will also explore the styles and structures of the music itself as well as some of the major creators and innovators that shaped it into the powerful and influential force it has become.

Prerequisite(s): ENGL 102 and Departmental Permission.
