PHIS 361 - Public Health Information Systems Analysis & Design

This course will provide students with an understanding of the principles involved in the analysis and design of public health management information systems (HMIS). Tools, techniques, methodologies and strategic planning issues related to the design, development and implementation of computer-based information systems in the public healthcare environment will be introduced. The course will cover relevant Health Information Technology (HIT) topics within the systems analysis and design framework, including basic principles of object-oriented programming and relational databases, assessing modeling approaches to translate Electronic Health Record (EHR) user requirements to system specifications, the role of data standards in systems design, issues of ethics, privacy and confidentiality, and managing HMIS development projects.
