SOCI 202 - The Miseducation of Black Folk and the Significance of the HBCU

3 Credits

(Every semester)
Prerequisite(s): None.  This course is designed to explore the indispensable role of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) as anchor institutions within the Black community. We examine the significance of the HBCUs within a historical and contemporary context. We explore how the HBCU serves as a pedagogical force that challenges systems of oppression and institutions that seek to maintain it. Students will learn the legacy of the HBCU and its second or hidden curriculum that aids in driving sociopolitical progress, social justice, activism and Black liberation. We will also explore contemporary challenges across the HBCU community as well as existential threats that seek to dismantle the HBCU. This course will address the miseducation of Black folk by centering the Black perspective, deepening students¿ capacity for critical thinking, stimulating their development of a “woke” consciousness, while challenging students to continue in the HBCU legacy of justice and social emancipation.
