Mission
The Department of Health Sciences is committed to the mission, goals, and objectives of the University while advancing knowledge, promoting health, and excellence in education, research, and community engagement. The department prepares students for successful careers in the health sciences by fostering critical thinking, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a commitment to ethical practice and health equity. Improving the health and well-being of individuals and communities is emphasized as well as the development of future health professionals who are equipped to meet the challenges of a dynamic healthcare environment.
Goals:

Provide high-quality, comprehensive academic programs that equip students with the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to succeed in a variety of health science careers.

Description of the Department
The Department of Health Sciences is dedicated to advancing the knowledge and practice of health-related disciplines through a combination of cutting-edge research, high-quality education, and community engagement. Our department offers comprehensive programs that cover a wide range of health topics, including public health, healthcare management, and health policy. We aim to equip students with the essential skills and knowledge needed to address global health challenges, promote wellness, and improve healthcare delivery.
The Department offers degree and certificate programs that prepare students for leadership roles in healthcare administration and public health technology. We help students build a comprehensive education by providing a strong foundation in innovative technology, as well as the behavioral and social sciences. Our interdisciplinary programs provide students with the knowledge, skills and real-world experience needed to succeed in professions ranging from healthcare IT to health policy consulting. With a focus on practical experience and evidence-based approaches, we prepare students for a wide array of careers in healthcare settings, government agencies, non-profit organizations, and research institutions.
Programs
Students may choose to pursue a BS degree in Health Services Administration, a BS degree in Public Health Informatics and Technology or a post baccalaureate certificate in Public Health Informatics.
Bachelor of Science
The Health Services Administration program helps students develop the skills to manage healthcare systems in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and managed care organizations. Students will also be prepared to take advantage of managerial and administrative opportunities with international agencies, such as the World Health Organization and the Pan American Health Organization, which allow them to analyze, plan and implement regional health policies.
The Public Health Informatics & Technology program combines health sciences, information technology, computer science and data science to prepare students for careers in managing electronic health records, data analytics and improving healthcare quality.
Post Baccalaureate Certificate
The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Public Health Informatics (PHIS) is designed to meet the high demands for professionals trained in both public health and informatics. Students will consult with public health leaders and offer a unique perspective on implementing innovative technology. Students will work at the managerial level within organizations like the Department of Health and Human Services, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, IT department of hospitals and health departments, the National Center for Health Statistics, and more.
