The Cybersecurity Specialization is available within the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science Program, which prepares students to build software for complex systems while developing the technical depth and practical skills the cybersecurity field demands. Elective courses are structured to allow students to pursue this focus with intention, moving beyond general computing into the specialized knowledge employers in the field expect.
Bowie State University is a designated National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education, a recognition awarded by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security. Through the Computer Science Department, students who complete the Cybersecurity Specialization study plan earn a Certificate of Completion confirming that all mandatory knowledge unit requirements in Cyber Defense Education have been satisfied.
Program Educational Objectives
Graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science Program will:
1. Apply theoretical principles, practical tools, and techniques in computing to solve real-world problems, including those at the intersection of software development and cyber defense.
2. Communicate effectively and professionally, both independently and within teams, across diverse colleague and client environments.
3. Continuously develop career skills through graduate studies, self-directed learning, and ongoing professional development.
To earn the B.S. in Computer Science, students must complete at least 54 credits of required and elective Computer Science courses, 14 credits of required Mathematics courses, 8 credits of required Science courses, and additional University requirements, for a total of 120 credits. Cooperative education programs are also available, giving students the opportunity to apply their skills in professional settings before graduation.
