ENGL 401 - History of the English Novel3 Credits
(Periodically) Prerequisite(s): ENGL 102 and ENGL 236. This course is a study of the history of the novel written in English from the realist and picaresque traditions of eighteenth-century novelists such as Defoe, Richardson, Fielding, and Smollett; through nineteenth-century prose stylistics such as Austen, the Brontës, Dickens, George Eliot, Hardy, and Conrad, and on through the stream-of-consciousness works of Woolf and Joyce and the post-colonial novels of Achebe, Ngugi Wa-Thiong’o, Jean Rhys, and Salman Rushdie.
