CRJU 305 - Introduction to Critical Race Theory3 Credits
(Fall, Spring) Prerequisite(s): SOCI 101 and CRJU 201 This course explores the concept of Critical Race Theory (CRT), which is a theoretical framework in the social sciences that examines society and culture related to categorizing race, law, and power. CRT recognizes that racism is ingrained in the fabric and system of American society. The individual racist need not exist to note that institutional racism is pervasive in the dominant culture. This is the analytical lens that CRT uses in examining existing power structures. Critical Race Theory explores the ways in which law may perpetuate group subordination and how law can be used to ameliorate it. Students will be introduced to influential classic and contemporary critical race scholars and scholarship. CRT will be placed within the traditional rubrics of statutory interpretation (text, intent, purpose, and modern dynamics).
